‘MasterChef’ runner-up Marianne Lumb wins us over with her new Westbourne Park restaurant

Didn’t your mother used to tell you that, ‘it’s not the winning, it’s the taking part that counts’? Well, if, like me, you used to think ‘what a load of shit’, the time has finally come to be proven wrong.

Call it ‘loser’s luck’ if you like, but when it comes to reality show contestants, it’s the runners-up that often do the best, while the winners quickly fade into insignificance. When the 2009 edition of ‘MasterChef: The Professionals’ aired, it was Steve Groves who won, but no-one remembers him now (in case you’re wondering, he’s now cooking at the deeply dull Roux at Parliament Square). Charming, lovely Marianne Lumb, with her beautiful, skilful, not-too-show-offy cooking, didn’t win on the day, but look at her now. All grown up, and with her own restaurant to prove it.  Tania Ballantine
