When Nathan Myhrvold first brought out his ‘Modernist Cuisine’, an excellent and authoritative cookbook, the complete set of six volumes were so heavy he needed a suitcase to wheel them around with him. And lovely though it may be, a book that even today costs £356 on Amazon is hardly going to be the season’s top stocking filler. However, as you might expect from the man who was once Microsoft’s Chief Technology Officer, he’s down with the kids when it comes to e-books.
‘Modernist Cuisine at Home’ was his second, follow-up book, an attempt to make the book more affordable (£100) for a mass market. But now he’s gone one further. ‘Modernist Cuisine at Home‘ contains all the content of this follow up, plus 359 spectacular never-before-seen photos and 37 all-new recipe tutorial videos. There are also 260 newly and fully developed recipes that didn’t appear in the printed version of the second book. Available to buy on iTunes, the e-book is a snip (compared to the hardback originals, at least) at £54.99. Best of all, you don’t need a trolley to carry it around with you. Guy Dimond
