When you’re responsible for designing an album cover for an internationally-acclaimed band, it’s safe to assume that there’s a fair bit of pressure involved. So in celebration of the often unsung heroes of album artwork, Cover Club gives centre stage to the creative folk behind these iconic designs.
Following the success of its first event, Cover Club is back for a second instalment at the Ace Hotel tonight (May 20) and they’ve wrangled Art Director Matt de Jong, whose cutting-edge campaigns have run on the sleeves of albums by Vampire Weekend, Deerhunter and Paolo Nutini. Recently returned from from New York, De Jong has a reputation for working with some of the more ‘difficult’ artists in the industry and getting the best out of them – so it’s safe to assume that plenty of stories will be shared.
Currently working on what is being called his ‘most ambitious project to date’, de Jong will be also be spilling the beans on working with white hot electronica outfit Clean Bandit. So if you’ve ever wanted an insight into the art that pulses through the music industry, cancel your plans and head down to Shoreditch for 8pm. Maccabees frontman Orlando Weeks will be DJing with Public Information Records co-founder Lionel Skerratt and, oh yes, the whole thing is absolutely free. Adam Potter
