The City’s full of ghastly wine bar chains lacking charm and personality, right? Wrong! But it does lack independently run venues with personal service and simple ambience. If this is what you’re yearning for, try The Winemakers Club. It occupies musty archways below Holborn Viaduct, and is empty apart from owner John Baum and a few hundred of his favourite wines. Baum sells these takeaway (mostly), but you’re also welcome to stay and drink wine on the premises. A wine preservation system keep eight whites and eight reds by the glass in tip top condition (from £3.50 for 125ml), and Baum is happy to guide you towards the wine of your dreams. Cheese, charcuterie and other snacks are also served (£8 for the larger plates). A curiosity well worth seeking out, with some unusual and terrific wines to boot.
