Plans to put a 32-metre inflatable Santa hat on top of ITV’s South Bank headquarters have been rejected by Lambeth Council.

This is either tragic news or a lucky escape, depending on how you feel about trashy Christmas decorations.

The helium hat was going to promote charity ‘Text Santa’ by featuring the appeal’s phone number. It was also going to make the area 110 percent festive.

However, Lambeth Council stated that the decoration would be ‘visually dominant within the surrounding area’. Which is fair enough.

The council reported: ‘This would detrimentally impact upon and would fail to preserve or enhance the character and appearance of the surrounding South Bank Conservation Area and the setting of the Grade II-listed National Theatre.’

Back in 2011, ITV fitted the building with world’s largest bra to raise money for the Breast Cancer Campaign. The 30-metre fluorescent pink boob-holder was sold for more than £3,000.

We say: giant clothing items for all London buildings. A tuxedo for the Houses of Parliament! A pair of ‘2015’ novelty glasses for the Shard! And – as demonstrated above – a Santa hat for Big Ben!
