Youth is like, so over: with octogenarian literary legend Joan Didion starring in a Céline campaign and Helen Mirren as the new face of L’Oreal, this season is all about the OAP. To celebrate, Selfridges’ annual Bright Young Things talent showcase has been given a blue-rinse makeover, becoming – you guessed it – Bright Old Things.
With ages ranging from late forties to mid-eighties, each participant has undergone a ‘retirement renaissance,’ turning their back on their lifelong career to strike out in a completely new field. Amongst the 14 golden oldies, you’ll find Molly Parkin, a former fashion editor who’s taken up a paintbrush in her dotage, and aptly named architect turned topiarist Tim Bushe.
The Bright Old Things have all been given a dedicated Oxford Street window, where they’ll provide passers by with an insight into their worlds. Special props to silver surfer Tony Gibson, a former product designer – his display mimics his studio in Wales, where he broadcasts ‘Earth News for Space,’ a vlog series which explains life on Earth to extra-terrestrials. You don’t get that from Zoella.
