Notice anything different about this coin? Anything at all? The more observant amongst you will have worked out that the above portrait of the Queen is a new addition.
The Royal Mint unveiled the new side profile yesterday. It shows the 88-year-old looking glam in a crown and drop earrings.
The image is the fifth portrait of Queen Liz to appear on coins during her reign. It’s also the first ever coin portrait to be created digitally and not out of clay.
While coins go into production on Monday, they won’t be circulated until later this year. Engraver Jody Clark says: ‘I hope that I’ve done Her Majesty justice and captured her as I intended, in a fitting representation. The news that my design had been chosen was quite overwhelming, and I still can’t quite believe that my royal portrait will be featured on millions of coins.’
Apparently, this means it’s going to be a ‘vintage’ year for coins. We’ll be saving a pound to Ebay in 2040.
