The cloves come off for National Garlic Day

Who would have guessed that stinky old garlic would have its day? National Garlic Day (yes, really) is on April 19 – but you’ll smell it coming for days beforehand, as the cloves are chopped and crushed in London’s restaurants.

If you fancy a strong hit of the bulbs, the capital can supply almost anything you seek: a bar dedicated to the stinking rose (Garlic & Shots in Soho); places whose signature dishes are primed to keep the vampires at bay (try Dracula tonkotsu at Shoryu Ramen); and even pizzerias creating special dishes in honour of National Garlic Day. (Rocket in Holborn is dishing up a garlic pizza that uses both black and white varieties.)

If this sounds like seven shades of allium hell, take comfort in the fact that it only happens once a year.
