Got a phobia of mice, rats, cockroaches and other scurrying, shriek-inducing beasts? Best give the whole of Southwark a swerve the next time you’re looking for a place to live.
According to new figures from the British Pest Control association, the south-eastern borough gets more pest control call-outs per year than anywhere else in the entire country. Mice are the biggest problem, prompting 5,250 calls in 2013, with bedbugs (1,820 calls) and cockroaches (1,086 calls) also sending Southwark folk into fits of shaky-fisted terror.
Still, it seems the worrying headline stats may simply be a reflection of the borough’s large population, along with its high level of social housing. When the number of call-outs is pitched against population numbers, Newcastle comes out on top, with five percent of all Tyneside folk experiencing pest problems in 2013. But then you probably weren’t thinking of moving there, anyway.
